In 2009 he took a break from Medicine to join James Cracknell and Ben Fogle on the first ever race of its kind to the South Pole. Ed completed a two-day selection course beating over 650 applicants to win his place on the team. The expedition and selection process was filmed for a 5-part TV series for BBC2 called 'On Thin Ice'.
Prior to 'The South Pole Race', Ed was no stranger to physical hardship and had represented Great Britain as a track and field decathlete and led two teams to swim the English Channel for charity. After returning from the South Pole Ed celebrated becoming thirty with his '30 at 30' project taking on thirty adventurous challenges around the UK in a year, which included a Thames swim, a ‘Coast to Coast’ race across Scotland and an endurance mountain marathon on Dartmoor amongst others.
Since returning from Antarctica Ed has jointly led a ski expedition to the Geographic North Pole in 2012, which appeared on Channel 5’s ‘North Pole Ice Airport’. Ed has also jointly led a series of ‘Extreme classroom’ projects in the High Arctic and Africa. ‘The Coldest Classroom on Earth’ and ‘The Hottest Classroom on Earth’ were filmed for BBC World. These projects show that children with challenging behaviour, who are frequently labelled ‘un-teachable’, engage if taught with the right approach.
Ed is a regular keynote, motivational and after dinner speaker. In presentation he talks about leadership, team performance and the impact of team dynamics on a project. He focuses on maximising performance in teams under pressure and how to develop a cohesive understanding of your own team dynamics. He looks at individual and collective responsibility and how to form a healthy effective team quickly to perform at the highest level.
Daphne is widely recognised as one of the country’s leading experts on all aspects of NHS Partnership and Regulatory law. She is one of only two ‘top ranked’ medical partnership solicitors in the Chambers UK legal guide and frequently speaks and writes on medical partnership matters.
Kay has spent her career in Primary Care, initially working as a Medical Receptionist this opened her love for general practice. Working across all aspects of Primary Care, Kay ended up at NHSE with a national role, from which she was offered redundancy in 2015. She saw this as an opportunity to go back and re-engage with a patient facing role as a Practice Manager. During this return she realised that the family practice she loved had somewhat disappeared, she wanted to focus on patient engagement, improving patient health and well-being whilst maintaining a first-class medical service. This work is now described as collaborative practice, and Kay is cited as being a leader in this area. Focusing on what matters to the people and the population, utilising local skills, knowledge, and facilities to create a truly holistic service means that the practice is thriving under her leadership. Kay was awarded PM of the year in 2015 by the NAPC, speaks regularly about the role of Practice Management at national events, and is an expert in patient engagement and development. She is often interviewed, her skills and view given in national publications and shared as a truly unique leader of people, functions, and communities. A new type of Practice Manager for a new way of working.
In 2021, along with 3 Practice Manager colleagues Kay set up The Institute of General Practice Management; the representative body for Managers in Primary Care, in 2022 they successfully launched an accreditation process so all managers can now become MIGPM as registered professionals, a huge achievement in such a short time. Outside of her Practice Management role Kay is an independent trainer, covering all aspects of the administration of General Practice, particularly focused on the Five Year Forward View, development of PPG’s, empowering teams, change management and organisational development.
